Your cat’s emotional wellness guide! Fluv shares 5 simple ways to ease your cat’s stress and improve their mental health

The cat’s mind

Cats are a lot like us — they can feel and experience situations that threaten their mental wellbeing. This can cause stress, fear, and even depression. Since our cats can’t tell us directly how they’re feeling, it’s up to us as owners to watch for signs of tension or changes in behavior. These behaviors include:

  • Changes in appetite or food preferences
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Loss of interest in play and interaction
  • Hiding behavior
  • Avoiding the litter box
  • Reduced self-grooming and hygiene (such as grooming the head)

Keep an eye on the behaviors mentioned above, as well as any signs of illness such as vomiting or diarrhea, and check in with your vet to rule out any physical health issues. But what do you do when your cat is struggling emotionally? And how can you prevent your cat from feeling stressed or depressed?

Cats are sometimes thought of as low-maintenance pets, but they have mental, emotional, and physical needs just like any other animal. By meeting those needs, we can create an environment where our cats truly thrive!

Here are 5 proven ways to reduce your cat’s stress and support their mental health!

1. Establish a consistent daily routine

A 2011 study found that simply changing the timing of feedings or the person doing the feeding — even in otherwise healthy cats — was enough to trigger illness behaviors such as vomiting, weight loss, and diarrhea. This highlights just how sensitive cats are to changes in their environment.

While we all have trips to take or schedules that shift, helping your cat know when things are going to happen can make them feel much more at ease.

Try feeding your cat at the same time each day and cleaning the litter box on a regular schedule. This makes their daily life more predictable and helps them feel secure. It also means no hungry, grumpy cats!

2. Give your cat an outlet for their natural instincts

Even though cats have been domesticated, they still hold onto many of their wild instincts. Behaviors like climbing and being agile are completely natural — but without the right outlets, they can make home life a little chaotic.

By giving your cat a tall cat tree to perch on and a sturdy scratching post, you give them the chance to climb and scratch to their heart’s content — and save your furniture in the process!

3. Give your cat a safe space of their own

Being on alert is second nature for cats. For many of them, the world can feel like a dangerous place! Cats are not only predators — they’re also prey to many other species. They naturally seek out spots to hide and feel sheltered.

Make sure your cat has a hiding spot where they won’t be disturbed. This could be a shelf in the wardrobe, a cozy cave-style cat bed, or even just a tipped-over box with a blanket inside.

Research shows that having the option to hide when needed helps cats manage stressful feelings, cope with pressure more effectively, and bounce back from stress more quickly!

4. Handle your cat with gentleness

We all love giving cats a good pat — they’re so soft and adorable! But cats are actually very sensitive to touch, and they generally prefer brief, intermittent interaction over long, intense physical contact.

Cats can show signs of overstimulation, which means they’ve had enough. Watch for a flicking tail, ear movements, an annoyed meow, pulling away, or quickly turning their head to look at your hand. These are all signals that it’s time to stop petting!

Learn what your cat enjoys and what their limits are when it comes to physical touch, and always respect those boundaries. This helps prevent them from feeling overwhelmed — and protects you from bites and scratches too.

Also, avoid rough play or rough handling with your cat. This can put them on edge and teach them that it’s okay to be rough with people. Instead, keep petting gentle and redirect any biting or scratching toward toys.

5. Clean the litter box regularly!

Cats are naturally clean animals! They’re great at keeping themselves tidy, so most cats don’t really need baths — though regular brushing can help prevent hairballs and keep them looking their best.

Where your cat does need your help is in keeping their litter box clean! Because cats are instinctively tidy, a dirty litter box can be a real source of stress. A dirty box makes it hard for cats to cover their waste — and covering it is an instinctive behavior that helps them avoid being detected by predators. Even if there are no predators in your home, your cat will still feel the urge to dig and conceal any trace of their waste after using the box.

A 2017 study found that cats prefer a litter box free of obstacles — if there’s waste already in the box, they may not be able to maneuver around it. Most cats prefer clumping, sandy litter with nothing in the way, and ideally the box should be scooped at least once a day (twice a day is even better).

Signs of a mentally healthy cat

How do you know if these strategies are working? You’ll be able to tell! A happy cat will be active and outgoing — they’ll enjoy being around people, being petted, and climbing. They’ll eat, sleep, and groom themselves normally, and use the litter box without issue. When it’s time to rest, they’ll stretch out or lie on their side. Happy cats love being near their humans and may purr, rub against you, or simply choose to hang out close by.

Even with all these steps in place, some cats with more severe issues may need medical support. So if you feel your cat is experiencing significant stress or anxiety, talking to your vet is absolutely the right move!

Ultimately, your cat’s mental health starts with you. Hopefully you now have plenty of ideas for creating a calm, happy sanctuary for your cat right at home. When your cat thrives, you’ll find your own happiness growing right along with theirs!
