Since your cat’s ears do so much — hearing, feeling, and communicating — keeping them clean is essential. It’s recommended to clean your cat’s ears about once a week. Cat ear cleaning is different from how humans do it, so follow these steps:

1. Secure your cat

Since ears are a sensitive area, your cat may resist. Start by gently holding them or wrapping a towel around their body to keep their limbs still, leaving just their head exposed.

2. Apply cat-safe ear cleaning solution

A cat’s ear canal is L-shaped, which means cotton swabs or ear picks will only push debris deeper inside. Instead, use a veterinary ear cleaning solution — drop it into the ear canal to soften and loosen wax buildup.

3. Gently massage the base of the ear

After applying the solution, gently massage the base of your cat’s ear for 30 seconds to 1 minute. This helps the solution spread evenly throughout the ear canal and break down wax and dirt.

4. Let your cat shake it out

Allow your cat to shake their head naturally — this will fling out the loosened debris. No need to use a cotton swab to absorb it, as this can push the dirt back in!
