“Fluv Sitter Heart-to-Heart” is Fluv’s 3rd anniversary interview series, where we explore and share the stories of a special, loving, and warm group of people and their furry companions — pet sitters, the unsung heroes across Taiwan who quietly give so much to pets and their families. They treat pets like family and bring both professionalism and genuine care to their work. We’ll take you deep into the lives of these compassionate sitters — their stories, and how their work as pet sitters helps pets receive better care and improves the pet care landscape in Taiwan. Hear their reflections, takeaways, and challenges!
Whether you’re a pet parent, a current or aspiring pet sitter, or simply curious about this profession, this series may offer you a fresh perspective and a touch of inspiration. We believe every story has the power to change how we see a job — or how we understand love and care. We can promise you’ll find plenty of heartwarming stories about giving and love throughout this series.
Today’s guest is a pet sitter who is also a mom to a 4-year-old son and three cats — Hui-Wen. The flexibility of pet sitting allows her to care for her son, her own cats, rescue stray cats, and part-time look after other owners’ cats all at the same time.
What made you want to become a pet sitter in the first place?
I love cats so much. I have a 4-year-old son who has grown up alongside our three cats. Since I’m a stay-at-home mom who also needs some income, pet sitting fits perfectly — the hours are flexible, so I can look after my son, my cats, rescue strays, and part-time care for other owners’ cats all at once. I want to use my abilities to help every cat that needs it! Even though they can’t communicate with me in words, and there are times I simply can’t know what they’re thinking, the response I get from spending careful, attentive time with them is more than enough to show me that loving them is worthwhile.

Since becoming a pet sitter, has there been a particularly memorable experience that made you feel proud?
Once, while caring for an elderly cat with a tumor, I helped the owner modify the litter box so the cat could get in and out more easily. It was heartbreaking in the end — the cat eventually passed away — but at least she was well cared for in her final days.
As a sitter, how do you make the pets in your care feel loved, warm, and cared for like family?
Calm, unhurried, attentive care — and taking the time to understand what each pet loves.
Is there a touching story that made you feel you’d made a real difference in a pet’s life or their owner’s?
An owner was abroad for many days, and one time I walked in to find vomit all over the floor and the cat had lost a lot of appetite. I immediately called the owner overseas to report what I was seeing, and after a quick discussion we rushed the cat to the vet. The vet said the cat was in poor condition, needed to be hospitalized, and there was a chance things could become critical… I was close to tears, but I told myself I couldn’t panic — the owner abroad must have been worried sick too. So I kept a close eye on every update from the hospital, visited the cat every morning, and kept the owner informed so they could feel at ease. The job of a pet sitter may be short and seem simple, but what matters most is giving the owner peace of mind. Caring for a pet is just like caring for your own child — you can never be careless when something’s wrong.

How many pets have you cared for?
55 cats.
What impact do you think your work as a pet sitter has on the pets and their owners?
For the pets, they gain one more human friend. For the owners, it means having someone to share the responsibility of caring for their pet when life gets busy.
Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to pet owners everywhere?
To us, our pets may be just one part of our lives — but to them, we are their whole world. No matter how busy, tired, or tight on money you are, please take responsibility and care for your babies. Stay by their side and never give up on them, all the way to the end.
