1. Energy level
Pets with high energy who tend to lunge and bolt are better suited to a harness-style leash. Using a collar-style leash on a high-energy pet can lead to injuries to their airway or neck when you tighten the leash to stop them from surging forward. Pets with lower energy levels, or those who are scared of having something pulled over their head, are better suited to a collar-style leash.

2. Body size
When buying a leash, pay close attention to the design and construction. Every collar and harness is built differently, so make sure to have your pet try it on first to confirm it doesn’t interfere with their gait or pinch under their armpits. This helps prevent chronic joint inflammation or changes in your pet’s walking posture down the line.
3. Leash material
Leashes are mainly available in fabric, leather, and nylon. Nylon leashes are harder to clean and can develop odors after getting dirty, making them best suited for pets who only walk in cleaner environments. Fabric and leather leashes should be kept as dry as possible — if they get wet, clean and air-dry them immediately to avoid skin irritation for your pet.
