Home quarantine, confirmed COVID –you’ve just received a quarantine notice — but who’s going to look after your pet? How do you take your dog out for a walk? In recent weeks, the number of people in Taiwan under home quarantine, close contact isolation, home care, or confirmed COVID-19 has surged dramatically, and many pets have been affected as a result. Not sure what to do with your pet during isolation? Don’t worry! Today we’ve put together all the key points for pet owners facing sudden pet care needs during quarantine or close contact isolation — covering government regulations, pet care resources, partnered animal hospitals, pet sitters, pet transport, pet hotels, pricing, and more.

Received a home quarantine, close contact, confirmed case, or mild-symptom home care notice? Here are 4 pet care options
First, if you’ve received a home quarantine or close contact notice — or are under mild-symptom home care — you won’t be able to take your pet outside for at least 10 days (the Ministry of Health and Welfare may update this at any time). If you have a cat at home, staying indoors for 10 days is generally fine as long as there are no special needs. But if your pet is a dog that needs to go outside to use the bathroom, go for walks, or get some fresh air, the following 4 pet care options can help maintain your dog’s quality of life and daily routine.
-
Ask friends or family for help
— Most city and county animal protection offices recommend asking friends or family to help care for your pet. Consider giving your pet a bath and grooming before sending them over.
-
Contactless dog walking service
— Your pet stays at home with you, but when it’s time for a walk or some outdoor time, arrange a contactless dog walking service. Before the pet sitter arrives, leash your pet outside the door so the sitter can take them for a walk without any direct contact. The sitter will sanitize throughout and send you a full update.
-
Vet visit or animal hospital transport
— You can contact a pet transport platform (Uber Pet, Line Taxi, or Fluv for transport assistance; some city and county animal protection offices may offer free transport).
-
Pet hotel or shelter placement
— You can contact your local animal protection office about partnered pet hotels for temporary placement. Fees apply, and rules vary by city and county.
New Taipei City Animal Protection Office recommends that pets stay in their familiar home environment whenever possible, as that’s what’s best for them.
Pet care service listings by city and county
Each city and county offers different government pet placement services (most information is published by local animal protection offices) as well as private services. Information is updated regularly, so please stay informed. Before using any service, consider your pet’s adaptability and your own financial situation.
