Why does my cat keep jumping on everything? Here’s what every cat owner should know!

My cat Xiao Mi is an incredibly energetic little furball~ He spends more time on random furniture than on the cat tree I carefully picked out for him! Over the years, I’ve tried all sorts of methods to stop him from jumping on everything in sight — aluminum foil, air sprayers, and plenty of other quirky gadgets.

So in this article, I’ll share some of the most popular ways to stop your cat’s furniture parkour. But first, let’s understand why cats jump on furniture in the first place!

Why do cats run and jump all over the house?

Climbing is a natural expression of your cat’s instincts. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, when cats feel stressed, they may seek out higher ground: “Height allows your cat to observe the world from a safe vantage point and can be stimulating when needed.” If your cat seems anxious when jumping onto counters, it may be time to explore what might be causing them stress. →https://www.fluv.com/blog/貓咪情緒照顧小幫手!用5種簡單方法讓貓咪不再精神緊繃並改善心理健康!/

On the other hand, some cats jump on counters simply because they can — and because it feels great! In an interview with WebMD, veterinarian Dr. Aimee Simpson explained: “Cats have very powerful hind legs that allow them to extend and lengthen, along with a flexible spine and shock-absorbing spinal discs that help them land gracefully.” Stretching, reaching, and leaping onto counters may simply be your cat’s way of expressing their athletic abilities.

But that still doesn’t explain why some cats prefer counters over cat trees and other surfaces. Your cat may be jumping up purely out of curiosity. My cat Xiao Mi has always been obsessed with the food we eat — I’ve caught him on the counter trying to lick a tray clean or take a bite of ripe fruit sitting on the windowsill. He’s not being “naughty”; he’s just expressing his quirky, curious side.

How to stop your cat from jumping on furniture (or counters, kitchen tables, and more)?

The first step to keeping your cat off counters is making those surfaces less appealing to them. Experts from the anti-cruelty society explain: “As pet owners, we want to give our pets the best chance of behaving well. The key is to remove the temptation to jump on any surface from the very beginning, so they don’t develop the habit going forward.”

For some cats, this means wiping down surfaces before your cat can sniff out food residue, installing child-proof locks to keep them out of cabinets, and clearing away dishes promptly. These are all useful tools for guiding your furry friend’s food-seeking behavior.

If your cat is driven more by curiosity than hunger, then providing alternative high-up spaces is a smart move. Cat trees, window seat perches, and wall-mounted shelves are all great options. In fact, for particularly curious cats, you might want to offer all of them!
