2-day 1-night pet travel tips

When did you last take a 2-day 1-night pet trip and go on a little adventure with your furry friend? No matter how busy life gets, never forget to carve out time for both you and your pet to relax and enjoy each other’s company. This time, we’ll walk you through how to plan a fun-filled 2-day 1-night pet getaway — strolling through pet-friendly attractions, staying at cozy pet-friendly accommodations, and dining at creative pet-friendly cafés. Of course, we’ll also remind you of a few dangerous no-nos when driving with your pet, so every trip stays safe and enjoyable. Let’s hit the road with your furry companion and create unforgettable memories that are all yours!

Watch out! 4 dangerous things you should never do when driving with your pet

When planning a pet trip, many people choose to drive with their furry friend — but it’s not just about your pet’s comfort. You also need to keep road safety in mind for yourself and other drivers. Here are 4 things you should never do when driving with your pet. Avoid these pitfalls and keep everyone safe on the road!

1. Letting your pet roam freely in the car

Many pet owners let their pets move around freely inside the car without a pet car seat, seatbelt, or leash — some even let them sit on the driver’s lap or in the front passenger seat. This is not only distracting for the driver, but a mischievous pet can easily block the driver’s view and cause an accident.

2. Opening the window and letting your pet stick their body out

Pets are naturally curious! When you roll down the window, they just can’t resist poking their head out and taking in every sight and smell. While it looks adorable, it puts your pet at serious risk of falling out — and it also violates Article 30 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, which carries a fine of NT$3,000 to NT$18,000.

3. Letting the car get too hot

Driving for long periods can cause the interior temperature to rise significantly. Without air conditioning or a slightly open window for ventilation, even temperatures that feel tolerable to humans can be harmful to pets. Under Articles 4 and 5 of the Taipei City Basic Care Rules for Dogs and Cats, owners of cold-climate breeds or those that struggle to regulate body heat — such as Shiba Inus, Huskies, and Persian cats — must keep the temperature below 30°C. For other breeds, the temperature must stay between 10°C and 35°C. Failure to comply may result in a penalty.

4. Leaving your pet alone in the car

Even if you’re just stepping away briefly, never leave your pet alone in the car. Taiwan’s generally hot climate means car interiors can heat up rapidly, while cold fronts can push temperatures below 10°C — both seriously harmful to your pet’s health. Article 5 of the Animal Protection Act requires pet owners to provide “a safe, clean, ventilated, well-drained, adequately sheltered, lit, and temperature-appropriate living environment.” Violations can be penalized by local authorities under their respective care regulations.

If you’re taking your pet out for a drive, we recommend keeping them in the back seat (a pet car seat works great), with the windows closed (while making sure there’s good airflow so it doesn’t get stuffy). You can also put some of their favorite toys in the back. Always bring a carrier or travel crate, and use a leash to limit your pet’s movement as much as possible — it’s the safest approach!
